Rugby Festivals

Richmond Athletic Association has always been a traditional host of rugby festivals.

With nine sevens and one XV tournaments annually we provide a platform for organisations to network, socialise, fund raise, build better awareness for their Governing bodies, or Charities and some just for the love of the game. We now have hundreds of teams battling it out to be crowned champions and over 15,000 spectators passing through our gates each year.

Upcoming tournaments include the new Rugby Rocks, Cronk-Cunis National U21s, Surrey Schools, The Law Society, Middlesex, NABs, RCUK, Surveyors, Lloyds & The Neptune City 7s.

A wide range of business sectors already compete so contact us to find out which tournament you can take part in or to set up a new tournament.

Spectators are welcome to a number of events with refreshments, catering, disabled & baby change facilities all available on site. Unfortunately no dogs except guide dogs are allowed in the ground.

For further details on each tournament simply scroll down and follow the link to their website.

Bank Holiday Monday 30th August 2010

This annual one-day National Under 21s Festival was founded in conjunction with the RFU to provide competitive rugby for XVs of Old Boys from schools around Britain.

The 14th Festival returns to the Richmond on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August 2010.

It's a prestigious, hugely popular, highly successful annual reunion occasion with some excellent rugby on display. Over 850 players in 50 teams entered the 2009 Festival, representing some of the strongest State and Independent schools throughout Britain. Almost 100 XVs of Schools’ Old Boys have entered over the past 13 years from as far afield as the West Country, Wales and Scotland.

Last year it was the biggest day of 15-a-side adult rugby that England had ever seen and has received the RFU President’s XV ‘Recognition Award’ in the Play-On category.

The competition will be fast and continuous again this year with students playing on seven pitches, in over 70 matches, in 15-a-side, 15-minute-each-way, Cup, Plate, Bowl, Vase and Shield knockout Competitions

The Bars will be open and BBQs sizzling so come along, join the fun and give a cheer from 10am to 7pm

"The true success of a school's year group is not just the season's results but, rather, it is the number of lads who carry on playing afterwards.' David Rollitt, former England player and Rugby Master at St Paul’s School, London

Taylor Root Law Society Sevens 19thSeptember 2010

The Law Society Rugby 7s is one of the longest running and more established rugby 7s tournaments.  Set up specifically for qualified lawyers, the event is now in its 35th year and having gone from strength-to-strength over the years is now a pinnacle in the legal calendar.

The Law Society Sevens provides a fun and competitive day for the legal profession to enjoy seven aside rugby against a social background. The day is very family friendly with attractions such as a bouncy castle and face painting.

The Tournament comprises two competitions (the Main Tournament and the Plate Tournament) and a field of 32 teams; each tournament is run on a simple knock-out basis, with those who lose in the first round of the Main Tournament, falling into the Plate Tournament – this way each team is guaranteed 2 games.

There is a £3 entry fee on the day for all players and spectators, with all proceeds going to the Wooden Spoon charity, the charity of British and Irish rugby.

For further details please follow the link above.

The Daily Mail and RBS Surrey Schools Sevens March 2011

The Surrey Schools Senior 7's will be held at Richmond Athletic Ground, the Competition is sponsored by the Daily Mail and the Royal Bank of Scotland who have contributed massively to schoolboy rugby.

In 2009 we saw 52 teams enter the competition, not only from Surrey Schools but also from Schools all over the South of England and two teams from Wales - Brynteg and Coleg Sir Gar.

The tournament is structured around 13 groups of 4 with the winners and the best 3 runners up going into the knock out section. The next best 8 Surrey Schools go forward into the plate competition. In 2009 the main competition was won by Wellington College who beat Millfield School in the final.

This truly is a spectacular day to come and view some emerging talent from our Schools and all visitors are welcome.

For further details please view the Surrey Rugby Website under Surrey Youth and Schools.

 Middlesex Sevens 7th May 2011

The Middlesex Club Sevens passed its 10th Anniversary last year and is a grass roots tournament based around the true spirit of rugby football.

It occupies the traditional end of season slot now vacated by the senior International Sevens event, with entry open to all RFU affiliated clubs throughout England, including colleges, services, universities and ladies teams. With the Club Sevens growing in stature each year, last year was a triumphant year for the grass roots competition with a record number of entries from teams in London and the Home Counties.

Last year’s Cup winners Millfield Old Boys will be back to defend their title against the likes of Harlequin and Saracen Amateurs, Esher, St Mary’s College, Rosslyn Park, and Ruislip.  As has come to be expected of any sevens event worthy of the name, the bars at Richmond will be open all day, there is a variety of food on offer, picnics in the car park are de rigeur, with special picnic car park passes on sale, and a festival atmosphere will prevail.

For further information and prices on tickets, marquees and corporate entertainment facilities please call this number now 020 8607 9921.

NABS Sevens 8th May 2011

NABS is the support organisation for the marketing communications industry.  It is wholly funded by the industry that it supports, with around 80% of income coming from a series of events which run throughout the year. The NABS Rugby Sevens Tournament celebrated its 47th year in 2009, making it the longest-standing event in the calendar.

On the day, around 30 teams from across the communications industry compete to win the Champion's Trophy, with separate competitions to win a Plate and Bowl for the runners up of the group stages.

Every team is guaranteed at least 4 games. Games are 7 minutes each way with a minute for half-time, except the final for the Trophy, which is 10 minutes each way with 2 minutes for half-time.

The event also has plenty to do for supporters - with the option of cheering on your colleagues from the stands or from the privacy of your own marquee, which can be hired at an additional cost.  We will also have a Family Area with a bouncy castle, games and costume characters to entertain the children.

Refreshments are available from midday from the bar and barbecue.

Surveyors Sevens 15th May 2011

The National Surveyors Sevens Tournament is now in its 40th year, and has become one of the major Sevens events of the Calendar Year, officiated by London Society and International referees.

Although restricted to teams which are property related, up to 6,000 spectators turn out to watch the rugby, and enjoy the general hospitality of the event at a usually sunny weekend in May.

Sixteen full internationals have played in this tournament including the likes of Chris Ralston, Andy Irvine, Chris Oti, Rob Andrew, Andrew Harriman, Gavin Hastings and Lawrence Dallaglio, and even today when there are no internationals the standard remains high. Eric Peters currently works at and coaches one of the competing teams, and Simon Smith turned out the day after having scored for England against Wales at Cardiff!

Come along and enjoy the day!

Anyone wishing to enter a team, please contact Gordon Wood of the Organising Committee at DexterWood & Partners, 15 Berkeley Street, London W1J 8DY or 020 7355 0950

  Lloyds Sevens 19th May 2011

The Lloyd's Rugby Football sevens is run by Lloyd's Rugby Club.

Teams enter from the Lloyd's underwriting and broking community and over the last few years the competition has gone from strength to strength and now has 40 teams playing in this fun festival of rugby, watched by over 3000 spectators. The day out is enjoyed by players and spectators alike.

There are two competitions running alongside each other the Main Competition, which has become highly competitive and produces a great standard of rugby, and the Plate Competition which allows for a more pedestrian pace and provides the opportunity for those not so familiar with a rugby pitch to enjoy a great day out!

Neptune City Sevens 22nd May 2011

The Neptune City Sevens is the longest running rugby event for firms associated with the City. First held in 1973, it has now taken place 35 times.

Over 30 City of London firms (including Clifford Chance, PwC, Accenture, Savills) battled it out in the sunshine on Sunday 22nd May 2010 for the crown. In the end it was the City Badgers, an invitation team comprising fund managers, traders and brokers from the City, who took home this year's Neptune City Sevens title, although only after beating off Apollo Multi Asset Management in a hard fought final.

Sponsored by fund manager Neptune Investment Management, the day's events raised in excess of £12,000, with all proceeds going to the Child Bereavement Charity.

It truly was a great family day out with over 2,000 people coming down to cheer on the players. Familiar faces included Daniel Casey, known to most as Sergeant Troy from ITV’s Midsomer Murders and England squad member Tim Payne, not to mention Walker Bear and Maisy who entertained the younger guests.
